Wool/ Mohair

Wee Scarves - Scarves - Table Runners - Wee Wraps - Wraps

Antrim Handweaving’s wool and mohair woven pieces are the threads of thoroughly researched and highly respected sources.  The independently run New England business producing small batches of naturally hand-dyed artisan yarns while actively supporting local farmers and environmental issues.  The direct-from-the-farm and the small hands-on spinning mill fiber products encourage the choice to weave with organically processed yarns from organically raised sheep.  The raised for fiber only yarns from sheep, Angora goats, and other wool/hair producing creatures address animal welfare concerns.  This profound textural and visual palette offers limitless possibilities for extraordinary handwoven pieces.

Sheep were first domesticated during the Neolithic period. There is a tremendous variety of breeds of sheep producing wool that has different colors, fiber textures, and characteristics. Wool is an extremely versatile fiber with important properties.  Wool is resilient and elastic, springing back to shape when crushed, and is wear-resistant. Fibers are hygroscopic, absorbing up to 30% of its own weight in water without feeling wet.  An excellent insulator, wool conserves the body’s own heat.

Mohair, light and fluffy to the touch, is fiber from the long and shiny hair of the Angora goat.  Angora goats are said to have originated in the mountains of Tibet.  The word mohair comes from the ancient Arabic “mukhaya” meaning “cloth of bright goat hair”.  Generally translucent and white in its raw state, mohair is extremely strong when spun and woven tightly, producing a remarkably crease-resistant fabric.
